Tassaduq Sohail Biography

Tassaduq Sohail was a distinguished Pakistani painter and short story writer, born on October 30, 1930, in Jalandhar, British India. His life and career were marked by a profound dedication to the arts, which led him to become one of the most prominent figures in the Pakistani art scene. Sohail's journey into the world of art and literature was both fascinating and inspiring, reflecting his unique perspective on life and society. Following the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947, Sohail and his family migrated to Karachi, Pakistan, in 1952. This move marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one that would eventually see him emerge as a significant voice in the arts. He received his early education at the Government Islamia Science College, Karachi, where one of his teachers recognized his storytelling abilities, dubbing him a "raconteur." This early recognition of his narrative skills foreshadowed his later success as both a painter and a writer. In 1961, Sohail moved to London, a decision that would have a profound impact on his career. It was in London that he truly began his professional journey as an artist. He attended evening classes at Saint Martin's School of Art, which played a crucial role in shaping his artistic vision. Prior to his involvement in the art scene in London, Sohail had established an Urdu literary circle, where he became known for his short story writings and tale-narrating, earning him the nickname "qissa-go" (storyteller). Sohail's first artwork appeared in an exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in London around 1978. This exhibition marked the beginning of his recognition as a significant artist. His work later appeared at Bonhams's international art exhibition in 2007, further establishing him as one of the prominent artists of his time. Sohail's art often depicted animals, portraying them as superior creatures and reflecting his love for nature. He also explored themes of social condemnation and non-conformance, with some of his artwork depicting "women with their eyes telling stories of their fears and desires." Throughout his career, Sohail's work was featured in numerous key galleries and museums, including The Noble Sage. His artworks were offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from 64 USD to 5,760 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. The record price for his art at auction is 5,760 USD for "A crowd approaching a hermit," sold at Bonhams Dubai in 2009. In recognition of his contributions to the arts, the Cultural Department of the government of Sindh opened the Tassaduq Sohail Gallery in the National Museum of Pakistan in 2018. This gallery aimed to display one hundred artworks of Sohail, celebrating his legacy and influence on the art world. Sohail's later years were marked by a prolonged illness. He was admitted to the Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad and later shifted to Dr. Ruth K. M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for further medical treatment. Unfortunately, he fell unconscious, and the doctors reportedly couldn't collect his medical history as none of his family members were present at the hospital. On October 2, 2017, Tassaduq Sohail passed away in the hospital at the age of 86, leaving behind a rich legacy of artistic and literary contributions that continue to inspire and captivate audiences around the world.
